I recently caught up with Daniel Suárez for a phone interview as the NASCAR Cup Series season continues to take shape, and there’s already a noticeable sense of momentum surrounding his move to Spire Motorsports.
Now behind the wheel of the No. 7 Chevrolet, Suárez and his new team have shown encouraging speed and chemistry right out of the gate. Adjusting to a new organization is never simple, but the early results suggest that both driver and team are settling in quickly. There’s a growing confidence within the group, and that’s translating into a strong foundation to build on as the season progresses.
This weekend presents a very different kind of challenge as the series heads to Martinsville Speedway. Known for its tight corners and physical racing style, Martinsville is one of the most demanding tracks on the schedule. It’s a place where patience, discipline, and track position are critical, and where even small mistakes can quickly turn into bigger issues. For teams still building rhythm early in the season, it’s a true test of focus and execution.
Beyond Martinsville, attention is already beginning to shift toward Kansas Speedway next month. Kansas offers a completely different challenge compared to the short-track grind—favoring speed, balance, and the ability to maintain momentum over long green-flag runs. Intermediate tracks like Kansas often serve as a measuring stick for performance, giving teams a clearer picture of where they stack up against the competition.
Another topic that came up during our conversation was the ongoing discussion around adding more horsepower to NASCAR’s current package. It’s a subject that continues to generate buzz throughout the garage, as drivers and teams weigh the balance between performance, safety, and the overall racing product. It’s clear that any potential change would have a significant impact on how these cars handle and race across different types of tracks.
Overall, the early part of the season has provided plenty of optimism for Suárez and Spire Motorsports. While there’s still a long road ahead, the combination of early progress and growing chemistry suggests there’s real potential for this group to continue improving week after week.
